Aquamarine is a light blue gemstone that was discovered around two thousand years ago. The name of stone has its origins in the Latin language. It is a combination of “aqua” – which means “water” and “mare” with translates to “sea” in Latin. The Greeks are credited with the first use of aquamarine for jewelry around the fourth or fifth century BC. From here, aquamarine spread around the world along established trade routes. As time passed, the popularity of aquamarine increased, and peaked around the seventeenth century. When it comes to jewelry applications, the color of aquamarine has won the hearts of jewelry aficionados around the world. This is because the light blue color of the stone is quite neutral and as such, can be easily matched with all skin tones and eye colors. In fact, the color is so very mild that it is often used in jewelry and ornaments for babies and young children. Light colored stones can sometimes be heat treated to intensify their colors. In most cases, the change in color is permanent. One interesting note about aquamarine – it is found in nature in crystalline as well as in glassy or amorphous forms. The glassy form is often found in odd shapes, some with holes in them.
Jewelry designers prefer to use stones that have an intense and deep color. Stones that have tinges of yellow and brown are considered to be less valuable and less desirable compared to specimens with a pure blue color. One disadvantage of the light color of this stone is that flaws are readily apparent even to an inexperienced observer. Stones that contain flaws such as inclusions and fracture planes are not as valuable as flawless specimens. Cutting and polishing aquamarine specimens are relatively easy and therefore easy to work into a wide range of jewelry designs and patterns. Aquamarine is almost always cut with facets for jewelry applications.
Aquamarine is mined in various countries around the world. However, Brazil is undisputed leader in aquamarine production – both in terms of the quality of specimens found here as well as the volume to aquamarine supplied to markets around the world. Among the notable finds in this country are the stunning 200-lb specimen found near Marambaia, and the 50- plus pound Dom Pedro. African countries such as Nigeria, Zambia, Madagascar, and Mozambique are also important producers of aquamarine. Mozambique in particular quite often produces specimens that are said to rival the best specimens found in the Brazilian mines. On the Asian continent, India, China, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have some aquamarine producing mines. However, the quality of Asian aquamarine is moderate at best, and is often only suited for costume or fashion jewelry applications. The United States of America is a relatively small producer on the world scene, even though this stone is found in several states around the country. Specimens from Massachusetts deserve special mention because the blue color of these stones is so intense that they are often compared to sapphires. One negative aspect of American specimens is that are usually small in size and difficult to process.

A nice wedding book is a gift the couple will cherish forever. Here are a few tips to get you started in putting one together.

Prepare
In order to make your wedding book complete, you really should try and attend every event that is associated with the wedding. If your book is to be a gift, and you weren't invited to every shower or were, for instance, only invited to events related to the bride, you will have to find some collaborators. Get in touch with people who are attending or did attend the events you were not able to and get as many photos as you can (this will naturally not apply to the bachelor and bachelorette parties). The more people you can get to contribute, the better.
If you should happen to run into someone who had the same idea as you to present the happy couple with a wedding scrapbook or photo book, see if you can work together on one book or at least try and cover different parts of the wedding process for your separate books. One of you, for instance, could concentrate solely on photos, while the other can gather different sorts of physical mementos and spend more time collecting quotes, stories, anecdotes, and that sort of thing.
Putting It Together
If you have never put together a scrapbook or photo book before, see if you can find a basic class at your local community center or something to get you started on layout, etc. There are also lots of resources online, and you should be able to find a YouTube video or two that can get you started. Things to keep in mind from the outset are to use acid-free papers (these help to preserve the photos and mementos), as well as taking the time to have a good look around online for such items as craft punches, quality scissors, matte papers, stamps, and the like.
Depending on how far back you want to go, and what kind of cooperation you get from the couple and their friends, you can even start the wedding book from when they first started dating. You could, for instance, get a matchbook, menu, or photo from the place they had their first date, or from the place he proposed, and sort of move on from there. You should strive to be as complete as you can, but it's unlikely you will be able to include every significant event. As long as you realize this from the outset, you should be okay.
Binding It
There are many options out there when it comes to choosing a binding style for your wedding book. Putting all the pages together in a 3 ring binder is an easy, if inelegant solution. Double loop binding might offer a little more permanence and a classier look. You could also, depending on whether you are doing a scrapbook or a photo book, choose the permanent, hardcover look and feel of thermal binding. These machines are fairly inexpensive and easy to use, meaning you can have your own machine on hand to use whenever you choose. Take a look around online or make a trip down to your local print shop to see what options are out there.

A souvenir book can help to make your family reunion a more memorable experience. Here are some ideas you can use to get started.
Theme and Preparation:
Your first plan of attack when creating your family reunion book is to contact all the members of your family who will be attending the event ahead of time. Before you do that, though, you may want to put some time into coming up with a theme for your book. You could create a book that simply features a short bio of each family along with all the photos they want to provide, or you could come up with a theme that is more specific. For instance, each family member could be featured by way of a shirt bio along with both a current photo and perhaps a photo from the awkward teenage years. It might be fun, for instance, to see a representation of Uncle Harry back when he was the king of the disco roller rink, just to gain a little perspective on the portly, sartorially challenged guy sitting over by the cooler.
The key is to get as much participation as possible, and to that end, you'll have to lay the groundwork early. Contact all of your family and let them know what kind of photos you need. If you are going for the historical and embarrassing, you might get more eager participation from siblings and spouses that you will from the people themselves. Nothing wrong with that, and turnabout is fair play, two can play at that game, etc. etc.
Organization and Layout:
There are a number of ways to organize your book. You can either go by age, family group, or geographical region. Do what ever works best for you, and what ever you believe your audience will find the most entertaining.
When it comes to laying the book out, if you have, and are able to use, such software programs as InDesign, Illustrator, or QuarkXpress, you are ahead of the pack. If you don't, but know someone who does, and might be willing to help, that is a bonus too. That being said, you should be able to get away with creating your book in MS Word, or in any word processing program that allows you to work with photos.
Have your cover and title match your theme, and find a good template or design it yourself, if you are so inclined.
Printing and Binding:
Your options here are many as well. If you are going to use color photographs, and you can afford to go whole hog, you may want to go for a four color digital printing process. If you are looking to save a few bucks or desire to keep to black and white, you can still get great quality laser prints.
As far as binding, one option to consider is to order your own binding machine and do the books yourself. The machines that are meant for home and small office use can be had for less that $100 brand new, and are very easy and fun to use. If you have a mind to do any or these sorts of projects on a regular basis, you really should consider having your own machine on hand, as you will save money right off the bat, and will have the ability to create a book at a moment's notice.
